But how does it compare to prior games? If you and your friends already have a favorite edition of Mario Party, do you really need Jamboree? Can it inspire friendly feuds like Monopoly and other board game classics? These Nintendo Switch games are bound to liven up any party that you're at. While Super Mario Party Jamboree offers a whopping eight different game modes, the classic "Mario Party" experience is the game's heart.
Play any prior Mario Party games? You'll be right at home. The core gameplay remains the same as in most games throughout the franchisepunch a dice block and race around the game board collecting Coins and Stars with a minigame at the end of each turn. Whoever has the most stars at the end, wins. You have seven boards to pick from, although only four are available right away. Plus, you have a robust selection of 22 characters throughout Mario's history, including two newcomers: Ninji and Pauline.
One new addition to the formula is the Jamboree Buddy mechanic. Similar to the "ally" mechanic in Super Mario Party, another character shows up which provides benefits if you win their Showdown Minigame. Their abilities range from mildly beneficial to obnoxiously good. The presence of Jamboree Buddies adds a distinctly "swingy" feel to the standard game, even above and beyond the usual RNG associated with Mario Party, because in addition to their special ability, a Jamboree Buddy doubles everything you do.
This includes buying Stars! Overall, though, Jamboree Buddies are an exciting tweak on a familiar mechanic. The Showdown Minigames are a highlight of Jamboree, and winning one offers a real chance of catching up with or surging ahead of your opponents. Despite the "competitive" vibe of these rules, I've found they're still great for casual multiplayer.

With settings like voting to select each mini-game and beginning each game with a bonus item, the Pro Rules are exciting because player choices become more important. There's still a lot of randomnessit's Mario Party, after allbut having more decisions makes beating your friends more meaningful. Indeed, that's one of my only gripes about Jamboree! Jamboree also features ranked competitive play with the Pro Rules.
Grinding a worldwide ladder in Mario Party seems sort of against the spirit of the genre, but I mean Fall Guys is popular, so there's probably an audience? Ranked play is an odd addition, but it's not like it detracts from the game. Super Mario Party Jamboree includes several different ways to play. That said, it's hard to consider Minigame Bay a "variant" since a mode for individually playing has been included since the very first game.
Each mode includes its own distinctive minigames. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of these gamesmost are pretty fun, despite often riffing on familiar concepts like Tetris.
Kamek's Party-Planner Trek is probably my favorite new mode because it offers a fun way to unlock Decorations, earn Achievements which contribute to unlocking new boards and cosmetics , and access unique mini-games. Offering 48 hours of play, it's an interesting addition that fortunately doesn't overstay its welcome. It was a fun way to familiarize myself with the new boards in solo play, but when I finished it I had no real urge to play further.
In contrast, the rest of Super Mario Party Jamboree's modes are fun, but offer pretty much the same experience each time you play. Despite having fun minigames, the core "idea" of these modes grows repetitive. That's one reason the Pro Rules stand out to methe choices they add make the game more interesting through consistency, not less. There are a lot of mini-games you can play in Tears of the Kingdom.
Here are the best ones you can find. Considering nearly half the game's minigames use some form of motion controls, it's not surprising that we've got additional game modes using the feature. While motion controls are somewhat out of vogueeven on the Switchthey're still a great fit for party games as was demonstrated by the surprisingly good Wii Sports.
